The DR® PRO XL520 Chipper Shredder is designed as a versatile yard and garden cleanup machine, combining branch chipping and material shredding capabilities in one unit. It can chip branches up to 5 inches in diameter and shred yard and garden materials up to 1.5 inches thick.

The machine uses 24 serrated, free-swinging shredding hammers, a 12 HP DR® OHV engine, separate oversized chipper and shredder hopper openings, and a hardened steel PRO-SPEC™ chipper knife. According to the manufacturer, its shredding system can provide up to a 20:1 reduction for lighter materials.

5-Inch Chipping Capacity

The PRO XL520 features a side chipper chute designed to process branches up to 5 inches in diameter. Its 8-inch x 14-inch chipper hopper opening provides access for loading branches into the chipping system.

The chipper uses a vertically oriented hopper, angled heavy-duty chipping knife, and air channel designed to help pull branches into the machine and move wood chips through the discharge. Most materials are designed to self-feed after being placed into the chipper hopper, reducing the need to manually force branches into the machine.

20:1 Shredding Reduction

The shredding system uses 24 serrated, free-swinging hammers to process leaves, sticks, stalks, and other yard and garden waste up to 1.5 inches thick. According to the manufacturer, the serrated hammer design can reduce lighter materials by up to 20:1.

The resulting material is described by the manufacturer as a fine, pre-composted mulch that can be composted or tilled into soil.

The shredding hammers are reversible and can also be rehung using the opposite mounting hole to provide fresh cutting surfaces.

Serrated Free-Swinging Shredding Hammers

The PRO XL520 uses 24 serrated, free-swinging shredding hammers. Their jagged edges are designed to break down material fed through the shredder hopper.

The hammers can be reversed and rehung from the opposite hole, allowing additional cutting surfaces to be used when needed.

Oversized Hopper Openings

The PRO XL520 has separate openings for chipping and shredding:

The large shredder hopper can accept multiple stalks up to 1.5 inches thick along with leaves and side branches. The chipper hopper accommodates branches up to 5 inches in diameter.

The PRO XL520 is equipped with a 12 HP, 420cc DR® OHV engine. Electric starting is standard, with a recoil backup starting system.

Pin Hitch for Off-Road Towing

A pin hitch is included as standard equipment for use with an ATV, UTV, or lawn tractor. This allows the PRO XL520 to be moved to different areas of a property where yard cleanup work is required.

Optional Road-Towing Package

An optional Road-Towing Package is available for the PRO XL520. According to the manufacturer, the package allows the chipper shredder to be transported on public roads at speeds up to 45 mph.

The Road-Towing Package includes:

PRO-SPEC™ Chipper Knife

The PRO XL520 features a hardened steel PRO-SPEC™ chipper knife made from high-carbon/high-chromium forged alloy tool steel. The manufacturer states that these knives are designed to hold an edge longer than those used on lower-cost chippers.

As with any cutting tool, maintaining a sharp knife is important for maintaining proper performance. The manufacturer recommends keeping a replacement knife available to help minimize downtime when maintenance is required.
